Program Details

The Classical Humanities program at Xavier University focuses on Latin and Greek culture, including courses in Classical art, history, archaeology, architecture and mythology. This program is designed for students who have an interest in the classical world but prefer to study an array of topics and themes in their undergraduate education rather than specialize in the Latin or Greek languages.

Sample Courses

Xavier is known for providing an education that's both challenging and personal. Here are some courses that are part of the Classical Humanities major at Xavier:

Elementary Latin I (LATN 101) - The ancient Latin language. Syntax, vocabulary, and morphology. The skills necessary to read Latin.

Elementary Greek I (GREK 101) - One semester. The ancient Greek language. syntax, vocabulary, and morphology. The skills necessary to read ancient Greek.

Rhetoric (ENGL 115) - Intensive theoretical and practical study of discourse. For students who have acquired basic writing skills.

Theory of Knowledge (PHIL 200) - An introduction to philosophical questions regarding knowledge, truth, and science by way of Descartes's Discourse on Method and other texts.

Clubs

Eta Sigma Phi

Eta Sigma Phi is the national honorary collegiate society for students of Latin and/or Greek languages and culture. Members meet monthly to host movie nights, make trips to classical sites like the Parthenon in Nashville and discuss the classics.

Study Abroad

Classical Humanities Major at Xavier University

The Classics program at Xavier University Xavier's program focuses on literature and language. Students specialize in either Latin or Greek while pursuing courses in translation. Through a close reading of ancient authors in the original language and broad exposure to texts in translation and secondary scholarship, a degree in Classics or Classical Humanities is designed to bring students into close contact with the world of the Romans and Greeks.
